1. Balance the Chemicals
When your pool water’s chemical composition is correct and balanced, your pool should be sparkling blue and there will be no bacterial or algal growth. When you find that the pool is starting to look green and/or cloudy, the first thing you should do is test the chemical levels. If you don’t already have a kit for the testing of the water’s cyanuric acid, free chlorine, acidity, total alkalinity and calcium hardness, go out and get one, take a sample and add the necessary testing solutions. On the basis of the results, a good test kit should come with instructions telling you action to take to restore the pool to normal. If you’re unsure, take your sample to a pool care professional and ask them for advice. Assuming that the correct actions are taken, your pool should clear up quickly.
2. Use Shock Treatment for a Cloudy Pool
Sometimes, a murky or green pool needs drastic treatment to clean it up. This is not something you should do too often, but there are times when it is absolutely necessary. When your pool turns green, it means that the free chlorine and acidity levels have shifted to the extent that the water is now hospitable to algae growth. The cloudiness you sometimes see could indicate bacteria. You can get rid of these quickly by adding three to five times the usual amount of chlorine to your pool.
3. Skim & Scrub Regularly
Skimming should be done every day, especially if you have a lot of trees surrounding the pool. If you don’t have an automatic skimmer that attaches to your return jet, skim the pool manually using your net.

Scrubbing should be done every week or two to remove any algae build-ups. A good, hard scrub with a brush should do the trick. If you come across a more stubborn spot, you can apply some algaecide to kill the growth before cleaning the remnants away.
4. Have a Professional Service at Least Once a Year
Although you can keep your pool in a good state on your own, sometimes you need to trust a professional. It is advisable to get a pool technician to inspect and service your pool at least once a year. Having someone in the know check your pool, pump and filter from top to bottom and end will make it easier to maintain beautiful, clear water all year through.
5. Clean Out Oils Using a Tennis Ball
You know your pool often looks much the worse for wear the day after you’ve had a big party, with several people getting in and out of the pool. The water often goes cloudy, or you might notice oily residues left behind – hair products, sunscreen or natural oils from the skin of your guests. Here’s a tip to clear these oils away: throw a tennis ball into the pool and let it float around for a few hours. The fibres on the ball absorb the oils and clear away that unpleasant residue.
