5 Things About Your AC that You Didn’t Know

Most people who use their air conditioning units every day during the summer months probably don’t fully understand how it works on a mechanical level. Unless you’re an HVAC technician like the ITZ team, you wouldn’t be required to know much more than basic operations.

Lesser-Known Airconditioning Facts You Should Take Note Of

However, the more you know about your air conditioning system, the better you can take care of it so it runs at the highest possible efficiency and lasts as long as it possibly can. Rather than deep diving into the world of HVAC systems, keep reading the blog for are five facts about aircon that you may not know that can help elongate the life of your system.

1. Aircons Can Be Adjusted & Optimised for Energy-Efficiency

Thanks to the advances in technology, programmable thermostats are becoming quite common among households. They reduce the overall energy consumption and save you money on your monthly energy bill.

Programmable thermostats have at least four different settings that you can customise: one for when you wake up in the morning, one for when you leave for work, one for when you get home, and one for when you go to sleep. Some thermostat systems even come with WiFi and an app so you can program your settings directly from your phone.

2. Dirty AC Filters Can Increase Energy Consumption

Indoor air can sometimes be more polluted than the air outside since pollutants like gases and oils get trapped with nowhere to escape. This means your aircon filters can get dirty in a short amount of time and need to be replaced relatively often. When they aren’t replaced, they can run inefficiently as it takes more energy for the system if the filter is clogged and dirty.

If you aren’t sure when your filter is ready to be replaced, not to worry. A good rule of thumb is to replace it once a year, but you can replace them as needed, which might mean every six months or so. Additionally, it’s a good idea to check the condenser coils once a year and cleaned whenever they get dirty, as well as cleaning out the air ducts once every three to five years. The cleaner the system is, the more efficiently it can run.

3. Your AC Isn’t Just Designed for Summer Use

Modern air conditioners are more than just cooling units. They now come with different modes for the different seasons of the year, so whether you want it warmer or cooler in your home, or want to remove excess humidity during the rainy season, your AC unit is suitable for all of it.

4. Size Matters

It’s a common misconception that bigger air conditioning units work better. The opposite is true, because a system that’s too big may not be removing the humidity properly from the air while using a lot more energy to do so – often more energy than necessary to remove less humidity. This can drive up the energy bill. Likewise, if the unit is too small, it won’t be able to keep up and will also run up the energy bill by turning off and on again so much.

5. Your AC Also Needs to be Kept Cool

When your air conditioning works hard to keep you cool, you should help as well. The hotter your home is before you turn on the AC, the more it has to work to cool it and keep it cool. Also, the hotter the unit gets, the higher the chance of it overworking, which you want to avoid to keep it lasting for longer. One way to reduce heat indoors is to keep shades drawn during the day.
