How to Prep Your Air Conditioning Unit for Winter Use

As we move into winter, the In The Zone team want you to know it’s time to prepare your air conditioning units for the colder months. Although many people simply keep their ACs off during the winter period or turn the thermostat up, neither of these options is good for the health of your AC.

Prepping Your Airconditioning Unit for Winter in 4 Easy Steps

It’s better to follow a particular procedure – or better yet, get a professional HVAC technician to take care of it. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to prepare your air conditioning unit for winter use.

Step 1: Clean the Condenser Unit

Vacuum all dirt and debris away from the exterior fins, straighten any bent fins gently. Then unscrew the top grill and carefully lift out the fan. Remove all dirt from the interior of the unit and wipe surfaces down with a damp cloth. Then carefully replace the fan and reattach the cover.

Step 2: Check the Compressor

This is a simple listening test. Turn on the unit and listen for any buzzing, grinding or clunking. If the compressor isn’t running smoothly, you may need to replace it.

Step 3: Change the Air Filter

It’s important to check and change the air filter on a regular basis, as this improves the quality of the air coming into your house.

Step 4: Cover the Unit

If you are resting your AC unit for the winter, it’s best to cover it for the time it will be in disuse. You can purchase special covers for this purpose or, at the very least, you cut a piece of wood to the size of the unit’s top and place it on the AC, putting a stone or brick on top of it to keep it in place. This keeps leaves and other debris from falling onto the unit and helps to prevent small animals from building nests.

Check the unit periodically throughout the winter to ensure that there is no build-up of dirt, leaves and other waste. Rather than forgetting about your AC during winter, take the time to make sure that it is prepared and protected for the idle months to come. This will help to extend the life of the unit and save you money in the long run.
